American Tribal Style®

American Tribal Style® (ATS®) evolved in San Francisco, USA and involves a blend of bellydance, Gypsy (Ghawazee) traditions and Flamenco.

Why is it a good style to learn?

American Tribal Style® (ATS®) Bellydance is an excellent discipline for developing beautiful technique and confidence.

It is danced as a tribe, and has cues built into the moves to enable people to follow a leader and exchange leadership. It has flourished as a style around the world and is now on offer in Petrie thanks to Soul Dance.

Where does it come from?

The style emerged from a rich history of dance in San Francisco, with the genre of ATS® first formally put together by Carolena Nericcio and Fat Chance Belly Dance.

Since then tribes have formed around the world based on ATS® and other formats that have sprung from ATS® (by Carolena's students who've become celebrated dancers and creators themselves).

What is different about Rita’s ATS® class?

Rita has been teaching dance for more than 8 years and is passionate about helping a dancer to develop as a whole, not just with technique, but also through gaining confidence with improvisation and expression. She also believes in creating a positive attitude culture in class. As a remedial massage therapist when not dancing, Rita also likes to incorporate stretching into class.

How does this style connect me with others?

American Tribal Style® has a big focus on the "tribe" and creating a wonderful connectedness between dancers. This usually blossoms into great lasting friendships.

What do I need for class?

A positive attitude, a smile, a wink, and gentleness! And a bottle of water. This dance style is done barefoot. You may wish to wear a skirt or tie a scarf around your hips. It is recommended to wear a mid-drift top, choli or tight fitting top so movements through the chest and back are visible. As classes progress, you may also want to purchase a pair of solid finger zills. I can make some suggestions about where to find the tribal variety of zills.
